HAPPY KHMER NEW YEAR!
What's special in April in Cambodia? It's Khmer New Year. This is normally a time for families to come together and play traditional games and of course eat a lot of food.
This year, the government announced that the Khmer New Year public holidays will be rescheduled to a later date. The Tukquaters have been closed as well and everyone is working remotely from home💻 Please be safe everyone!

DIARRHEA CASES DROP IN CAMBODIA🧼
COVID-19 isn't all doom and gloom and although this fact is not strongly verified it makes a lot of sense. Since the uptake of better hygiene through handwashing, health centers have reported a reduction in the number of people getting the stomach rumbles.
At TukTuk we are doing our bit by promoting our handwashing song out to the community, receiving over 1300 views to date. It's a catchy jingle designed to stick in little minds. Go on, see if you can sing it 🎤🎶
A PERFECT ACTIVITY FOR KNY ✂
We squeezed in our March visits before the schools closed and introduced our 3rd book "Happy Khmer New Year". As part of our new Resource Package initiative, every book is getting supporting worksheets and activities so this month we included our "Year of the Rat" activity.
Teachers were shown how to make glue (video instructions) from flour and the kids cut out the shapes and made their very own rats. Even the most easily distracted kids were engrossed making this activity a huge success✨
GOT SOME BORED ANKLE BITERS AT HOME?
You can download the activity here and check out the instruction video created by our French Intern Anaëlle.
NEW UKULELE GRADUATES🎓
4 more teachers have successfully completed the Bondi Ukulele 10 week music program. Phan Ey, our music teacher, made the 30km trek each week to what could be described as our most enthusiastic class yet.
After the ceremony, the teachers broke out the ukes for a sing-a-long with all the kids. They will have a few months to practice on their very own Ukuleles ready for classes to start up again.
KHMER OF THE MONTH
Khmer Word: Suostei Chhnam Thmei
"Suostei" means "hello, "Chhnam" means "year" and "Thmei" means new", altogether means "Happy New Year". There are many ways to say this in Khmer but this one is nice and short.
Khmer Food: Kor Sach Chrouk👇
WHO PAINTED THE SKY 📺
Featured in the villages in March was our second animation, "Who Painted the Sky", the story of finding the rainbow. It will soon be on Youtube with English subtitles so don't forget to "subscribe" to our YouTube channel! To accompany this animation, we played a few colour games and created our very own rainbows with bubbles and sunlight 🌈
MAYU MAKES HEADLINES IN JAPAN📰
Not only is Mayu famous as the Khmer speaking educational specialist in Pursat, but now she has reached international headlines in one of Japan's biggest newspapers, the Asahi Shimbun. She is featured in a series of articles highlighting Japanese nationals living interesting lives overseas.
Although the focus was not TukTuk, she managed to drop in a few mentions along with Pursat. If your a gun with Google translate (or speak some Nihongo), you can check it out here.
VOLUNTUKER SPOTLIGHT | ANAËLLE
In what has become our quickest onsite internship ever, Anaëlle arrived in early March. Originally planning for a 2.5 month stay at the Tukquarters, things changed rapidly and before we knew it, she was recalled back to France.
In the 2 weeks, she was on site, Anaëlle crammed in a whole lot of work. We finally had a photographer to take some much needed and updated pics, created various videos (see the rat activity above), and evaluate our worksheets and assessment procedure. A flight wasn't enough to keep her away so she will continue in her role remotely.✨
We are currently looking for volunteers with the following skill sets to help TukTuk bring educational resources to Cambodia;
If you want to get involved or know someone with skills that could help us spread positive education in Cambodia, hit that link below and say hi (we're friendly, promise).
